August 2nd, 2017-Keeping Busy with Half of the Bronx

Hermana Morales and I
Hola familia y amigos

This week has been crazy busy. We are assigned to 2 wards, Concourse and Kingsbridge, and 2 areas. Normally there is a set of Hermanas for each ward but this cycle they sent home more Spanish sisters than they got so we are the only Spanish Hermanas for 1/2 the Bronx so we are always crazy busy. Although it's kinda nice. Normally both sets of Spanish sisters live in our apartment but since we are the only ones it's just us 2 for the whole apartment.

Wednesday: We had 3 appointments after P-day ended. We went to see Jacklyn who is an investigator who has genuine interest but is unwilling to change and keep her commitments which is sad. We are going to have one more lesson with her and then if she is still unwilling to change we will need to drop her. Dropping people is the hardest part because you want them to have the joy of this gospel so badly but they just won't come...:/

Then we went to go visit a less active named Luchí she's a single mother of 2 cute little kids. She says she wants to start coming back to church but that it's hard with 2 little kids and it's scary. We tried to help her feel better about and we think she will start coming to church again.

Then we went to go see a sort of less active member named Hermana Reyes. She lives in Concourse area and is supposed to go to that ward but she doesn’t like it, she didn’t even go to her sons mission homecoming talk because it was in Concourse, so she goes to the Kingsbridge ward. I mean we are happy she's active in church but she should be going to her own ward so we are trying to help her make friends in the Concourse ward so she will go there. She is this crazy old grandma and she loves the missionaries she's really funny, I like her a lot.

Anyway, a funny story we stopped to talk to this lady on the street with her 2 grandkids. We were talking with her in Spanish and then I started talking to her 5 year old grand son, in Spanish..., but he would only answer my questions in English. Then Hermana Morales asked him something and he responded in Spanish. So basically he wouldn't speak Spanish with me cuz I'm white! I thought it was so funny!

Thursday: We had service, we do our service at this kitchen that provides cheap meals to those who can't afford to eat lunch. So we served and waited tables and then we got to go out and sit and talk with some of the people so that was fun.

Then we went to appointments. We went to talk with a woman who had her baby blessed here a few months ago but isn't a member. She's so cute and shy we are hoping that if we can help her make a friend in the ward she will start coming. Then we went to go visit a less active and as we were praying outside the door (we do that before we go to see anyone) her son walked out... That was awkward. But he let us come in and we taught a little lesson and they invited us back. That was good. Then we went to see the RS President in the Kingsbridge ward. We shared a message and asked if she knew of anyone in the ward that needed our help and she gave us 6-7 names which was so good. I'm glad that we can start building the trust of the members in both wards. But we kinda lost track of time and suddenly it was 8:50 and we were just leaving her apartment. We ran for the subway but missed the train so we had to wait 15 minutes for the next one and then we ran from the subway station home and still ended up being 10 minutes late.

Friday: Was crazy and we didn't even leave the apartment till 4:00. We did all of our regular studies but then we had to do weekly planning and since we have two areas we had to do it twice. It was so long and tiring but it was good to get it all done. But then we went to a "quick" appointment with a member couple (it was supposed to be 15-20 minutes) but all of the Latino are so chatty and it ended up being over 45 minutes and our message was only 5 and the rest of it was just them talking!

Then we had a meeting with all the missionaries and ward mission leader from Concourse ward (in each ward are 2 sets of elders and then us). I got to see Elder Peña from the MTC again he is assigned to this ward to so it was fun to see a familiar face. Then we had 2 appointments fall through so we went to do some look ups but they were all the way at the bottom of our area and so we were late getting home... even though we were running like crazy.

Saturday: We had the ward picnic for the Kingsbridge ward and that was good. It was good to meet members and we even had the home attendant from one of the members come and she was really interested in learning more so we are going to start teaching her! Then we went to an appointment but it fell through so we went to go look up a referral from the Elders. We taught her the restoration and she was very attentive but then at the end of the lesson she went on the offense and started telling us all the things see doesn't like about the church (apparently she'd done some "research") so we decided that we'll give a little break because she's not quite ready to receive the gospel.

Then we went to a dinner appointment and she brought out the food and then left to get something and the second she left Hermana Morales starts putting something on the plate  in napkins and then stuffing it I her bag. I was just about to do the same, (because if Hermana Morales didn't want to eat this I definitely didn't!) But then the member came back and there wasn't anything I could do but eat it... all... turns out it was breaded pig fat that had been deep fried. And yes... It was a gross as it sounds.... But now I have a Ziploc in my bag for when I find myself in a similar situation again.

Sunday: was long because we are in both wards we went to 5 hours of church. We went to all of Kingsbridge meetings and then also the last 2 hours of Concourse meetings. All 5 were, of course, in Spanish. I understood more than I thought I would but I still was lost most of the time. A lot of the members are Dominican and their accent is really hard to understand. They don't pronounce any of their "S's" they just kind drop them so now I'm not Hermana Dobson I'm Hermana daw-on.
Then after church we had 4 appointments scheduled but 3 of the 4 fell through and of course it was the very latest one that didn't so we did A lot of street contacting until the appointment then we had it and were almost late getting home again because she wouldn't stop talking and we couldn't get out of there (are you noticing a pattern yet?)  But luckily we did make it home on time (at 9:28 because we ran from the subway station).

Monday: We woke up at 5:45 to go play district sports and that was fun we played frisbee. Then we came home did studies and went to district meeting. Elder Ortiz our district leader, is a native Spanish speaker and so district meeting was run in Spanish, so basically I was lost the whole time. Then we had 3 appointments. Only one of them was supposed to be getting fed at one of them but we got fed at all 3 (you can't say no to food) so by the end of the night we were so full we were sick but once again because of the long Latina talkers we had to run home from the subway station to be home on time. I would not recommend running after you have eaten 3 dinners right in a row. It doesn't feel food.

Tuesday: We had a senior couple come and talk to the zone about how we can uses family history to help motivate new converts to start going to the temple. It actually was a really good class and I liked it a lot. Then we had 2 appointments back to back but really far away from each Other. And on the train going to the second one we talked to this crazy man... he was convinced that Jesus is an alien and that the bible is just a record of all of these extraterrestrial experiences. I was trying so hard not to laugh at him. I really wish I could have recorded him because they things he was saying were so funny. Then we went to the last appointment of the day had a great message it was 8:45 and were going to be out on time and get home on time... But then they said "wait we have food for you" and they wouldn't let us leave until 9:05so once again .... we ran from the subway and were still late getting home. It's kinda been a real struggle all week.

Anyway it's been a crazy but good week. I love you all and hope you are doing well I'll send pictures layer when I have better Wi-Fi! I hope to hear from you all soon!

Love Hermana Dobson
Me and Sister Morales when we first met.

We had a spa night to celebrate the weekend

The tall building in the back is what we call the great and spacious building. It has 25 floors and 40 apartments on each floor. Let's just say there are a lot of people living in that building. It's also the first place I went tracting.
