Wow! This week was amazing and crazy! What a conference! We watched both Saturday sessions and the church with just the missionaries. We aren't allowed to watch it at members homes and no members showed up to the church. But it was super cool to be there and part of the solemn assembly. I honestly don't remember when we did it for president Monson. So this was kind of my first one which was so cool.
I love how much both forgiveness/the atonement and how to receive personal revelation were brought up a lot. They are 2 very important things for this world to understand right now. I also am so excited for the 2 new apostles. Elder Gong came to our mission when President Nelson did back in September. I had the opportunity to hear him speak both at our mission conference and at stake conference 2 days later. I have no doubt that he truly is a man that is called of God. I look forward to hearing more from him (especially cuz when he spoke at stake conference he was making a penguin analogy and to make his point to waddled and made penguin noises at the pulpit, I'm excited to see how his conference talks go;).
President Nelson came to New York in September I was definitely able to get a confirmation that he was called of God. One thing I went into with conference was asking for a confirmation that he is a Prophet. It definitely came. The camera panned for a second on all the leaders with their hands raised sustaining him I too was standing with my hand raised and in that moment the spirit just filled the chapel and I knew that that was my confirmation! I love President Nelson! Did you see how fast he walked in and out of each session of conference? 93 years and he still doesn't slow down for anything. He's so cool!
I'm also super excited to learn more about Elder Soares! He's from South America so I'm sure he's cool;)
Second crazy thing this week is that there were transfers, next crazy thing! I didn't get transferred! Hermana Chacón did! That’s not super common for the trainee to leave first and have the trainer take over the area, but I guess I haven't finished whatever business the Lord sent me to do so now I have another 6 weeks to figure it out! Sister Chacón went to Inwood which is in Manhattan, I'm only a little jealous but I'll hopefully be back in the city in no time.
My new companion is..... Drumroll please..... Hermana Castillo! She has been in New York 1 transfer and was in Mexico for a transfer before that waiting for her visa to be approved. She is from Mexico and is super cute! She also doesn't speak very much English and I've been asked to help her learn it. She is super up for the challenge though so she'll be speaking like a pro in no time.
Miracle this week: we took some advice that was given at MLC to treat part member families as investigators. We started teaching Obdulio and Karina a few weeks ago. Karina is a less active member and Obdulio is her boyfriend. They just moved here from Honduras about a month ago. We started teaching both as investigators even though Karina has been a member, receiving the missionaries, for over 7 years. However she told us that in Honduras she never went to church more than once a month, she'd never read the book of Mormon, never prayed to know if it was true, and never kept the law of chastity or the word of wisdom or the law of tithing. As we started teaching them she began to change. She read the book of Mormon for the first time last week, she has come to Church every Sunday for the past 3 weeks, she stopped drinking alcohol and coffee. And then just on Monday she asked us how she can start paying her tithing. And now she is looking for another apartment so that she can move out of her boyfriend’s house and start keeping the law of chastity. And even though her boyfriend isn't ready to change yet, she is well on the path to becoming truly converted. Every time we come over she just tells us how good she feels when she does the things she knows she should. I am so grateful for the Gospel and how it can change lives.
Love Hermana Dobson
